Gutter guards are an effective and simple way for homeowners to protect their homes, especially those that are surrounded by large trees. They protect against drainage issues, mold and mildew growth and prevent the inhabitation of unwanted pests and insects. Their main purpose is to prevent fallen leaves, pine needles and twigs as well as other debris from going inside the gutters.
Although gutter guards will not completely eliminate the need for gutter cleaning, they heavily reduce the amount of debris and therefore the frequency of gutter cleaning.
Depending on the number of trees surrounding your home, with gutter guards you can expect to reduce the number of times your gutters need to be cleaned by about one-quarter to one-half as often as before.
There are several types of gutter guards available. Currently, options include plastic PVC screen gutter guards, perforated aluminum covers, steel screen gutter guards, micro-mesh gutter guards, foam, brush and solid metal gutter guards.
We offer our clients several different brands of gutter guards however, we highly recommend Alu Rex Gutter Guards. Depending on the foliage around your home, we either suggest their ‘T-Rex’ gutter or the ‘Double Pro’.
To be installed on existing gutter guards the T-Rex Zip gutter guard is perfect for homes surrounded by trees with larger leaves. These gutters are outfitted with ‘alu-perf perforations’, which provides an excellent balance between maximum drainage and debris protection. Even during heavy rains, roll-back technology further prevents any potential overflow from your gutters. Self-sealing screws are used to adhere the gutters onto your home ensuring a very strong and leak-resistant application to the facia. This particular gutter comes with a lifetime manufacture sturdiness and 3-year anti-clog warranty. Its step design allows for greater water flow while resisting leaves from sticking to the top of it. Simply call us if this clogs in the first 3 years and we will fix it free of charge.
T-REX ZIP 5” GUTTER PROFILE
To be installed when you have at the same time when you are installing your eavestrough system the Double Pro gutter guard is equipped with a microfiltration layer protecting against larger debris but also against smaller tree foliage such as pine needles. Directly underneath the microfilter layer is a layer of ‘vortex technology’. This creates suction between the top membrane and the second membrane, which draws down three times more water during storms. As with the T-Rex gutter, this gutter is fully equipped with self-sealing screws to create a tight, sturdy fit to the home with minimal water exposure to the fascia of the home. Roll-back technology is also a part of this gutters design. The Double Pro model comes with a lifetime guarantee on materials and sturdiness as well as a 5-year anti-clog guarantee. Simply call us if this clogs in the first 5 years and we will fix it free of charge.
Both models are made to withstand snow and ice, as the materials do not rust nor warp despite repeated freezing and thawing
A Drip Edge isn’t sexy but it is essential
A drip edge is a piece of aluminum that goes under your shingles into your eavestrough. Its main purpose is to direct the water flow from the roof directly into the gutters. Did you know that over 50 percent of homes in the Ottawa area either fail to have a proper functioning drip edge or one at all? This is because it is not easily seen from the ground and thus often forgotten until the damage is done.
To protect the foundation on your home, drip edges are an excellent way to minimize the chances of your foundation being damaged by water intrusion. Drip edges are installed under the exterior perimeter of your home’s shingle roof and held securely in place with nails spaced every 2-3 feet. They can further reduce moisture collection and seepage by up to 99%.
